Oamaru man arrested for importing ‘P’

Oamaru man arrested for importing ‘P’

A 22-year-old Oamaru man has been arrested and charged with drug offences after Customs stopped a package containing 102 grams of methamphetamine.

A joint investigation by Customs and Police was launched after Customs intercepted the package at the International Mail Centre, destined for an Oamaru address, and found the methamphetamine hidden amongst shoes and clothing inside the parcel.

Customs’ investigators and Dunedin Police executed a search warrant at the man’s home in Oamaru on Friday, 20 May 2016. During the search officers also located a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

Customs Investigations Manager, Maurice O’Brien says this is another great example of Customs’ work extending beyond the border to apprehend those who attempt to import drugs.

“Methamphetamine is an incredibly harmful substance and Customs places priority on keeping this harmful drug away from our communities,” says Mr O’Brien. “The quick action from our investigations unit and our partnership with Police has proven successful yet again.”

The accused man appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning charged with Importing a class A drug and possession of a class A drug for supply. Further charges may be laid.

The man has been remanded in custody and will reappear in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday 24 May 2016.

The maximum sentence that can be imposed by the Courts for importation of a class A drug or possession of a class A drug for supply is life imprisonment.
