Rotorua to play host to Silver Ferns

Rotorua to play host to Silver Ferns

26 May 2016 - Netball fans wanting to see the Silver Ferns play in Rotorua can get behind the team and take their fan experience to a whole new level by registering as a Silver Ferns fan.

Registering and then buying their tickets online that way will give fans preferential tickets to the Jamaica vs Silver Ferns game at the Energy Events Centre on 17 September 2016.

Sports and Recreation Portfolio lead councillor Charles Sturt is encouraging Rotorua netball fans to get registered and make the third in the three-match series a sell-out game.

“Having such a high profile event here in a Rotorua venue is great. We get to see two of the world’s best teams here in our own town.

“We want to continue to see these types of events coming to Rotorua and choosing our world class venues,” said Sturt

This year the Silver Ferns team, which includes Leana de Bruin and Grace Rasmussen from the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, have a full season with seven home test matches to be played around New Zealand. Fortunately Rotorua has secured one of those test matches to be played here at our Energy Events Centre.

The Netball Quad Series starts off the season in August with the Silver Ferns playing England and South Africa. In September the team will make their way up the North Island competing for the Taini Jamison Trophy in the New World Netball Series against the world number four team Jamaica Sunshine Girls.

To finish off their home match games in October the Silver Ferns will battle it out for the Constellation Cup against long-time adversaries Australia in two full-on games.

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
