Comprehensive Sevens review needed, says Chamber

Confirmation that the Sevens tournament will stay in Wellington for at least three more years is great news, says Chamber Chief Executive John Milford.

“Wellington is the right place for the Sevens, so there was only ever going to be one decision, but now we have work to do.

“The Chamber looks forward to a comprehensive review of where the event is at and where new thinking might be going around ensuring we change the look and feel of it to increase its appeal.

“We need to look at who we want to attract, the pricing, and even at building other events around the tournament weekend so we bring more people into the city at that time.

“We need all relevant parties – the stadium, the council, Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency, businesses and the Police – to work together to achieve something that will appeal to the public so it lasts into the future.

“The Chamber also expects the council’s contribution from rates to the running of the event is a true reflection of the event’s popularity, and as part of the review we would like to see the cost-benefit from the past two events published so we can get a firm idea of what we’re up against.”
