Children ride for free before Cable Car upgrade

Children ride for free before Cable Car upgrade

Wellington’s famous Cable Car is getting an upgrade and will be closed from 7 June until the end of July. To ‘farewell’ the service, children will get to ride for free with a fare-paying adult on Queen’s Birthday Weekend (4-6 June).

Wellington Cable Car Chief Executive Simon Fleisher says this is a good chance for families to ride the Cable Car before the $3 million upgrade starts.

“Up to two children can ride for free with a paying adult. We’ve also got some fun drawing activities for the kids when they reach Cable Car Museum at the top of the Botanic Garden.”

Fleisher says the Cable Car will be closed for eight weeks from 7 June to 31 July for a major upgrade of the electric drive and control system and a makeover of the cars themselves.

“The last equipment upgrade happened in 1979 and technology has progressed significantly since then. This upgrade will allow the Cable Car to continue to operate reliably and safely well into the future.”

A replacement bus service will operate during the shutdown between Lambton Quay and Kelburn via the Terrace and Victoria University's Kelburn Campus.Buses will run every 20 minutes, 7am-7pm weekdays and 8.40am-6pm in the weekends.

It’s important to note the buses will cost $2 one-way, cash only. We do not acceptSnapper Cards, Victoria Intercampus pass or multi-trip passes. SuperGold Cards can be used for off-peak travel.
