Extra focus on keeping roads safe in the city

Extra focus on keeping roads safe in the city

Canterbury Police will be taking additional steps to increase the safety of vulnerable road users in Christchurch’s central city.

From 12 March this year the speed limit was reduced from 50km per hour to 30 km per hour.

This helps to protect pedestrians and cyclists.

Following the change Police have been educating drivers identified as exceeding the reduced limit.

Police are now taking positive enforcement action in order to encourage drivers to slow down and comply with the 30km per hour limit.

Education and enforcement are both factors in keeping our roads safe.

However, Police alone cannot improve road safety.

Drivers, and the decisions they make behind the wheel, are critical to ensuring fewer people die or are injured on our roads.

Please make the smart decision to be a safe driver and check your speed.
