Public input sought on proposed speed limit changes

After reviewing speed limits on roads around the city, Christchurch City Council is requesting feedback on proposed changes to 31 streets.

Most of the streets are in expanding residential or commercial areas, where rural roads have become more urbanised. The Council is seeking changes to speed limits to ensure that they are safe for an urban environment.

The Council is also proposing to extend the inner city 30km per hour speed limit to sections of St Asaph Street and Hagley Avenue to reflect the streetscape changes that are underway there.

Transport Operations Manager Steffan Thomas says, “There has been significant growth in some residential and commercial areas and that is great for the city. It is important to make sure that the speed limits in these developing urban areas are safe, while respecting people’s mobility. It’s about balance.”

“We are keen to hear feedback on the proposed speed limit changes as the communities around these streets will have valuable insight on how the streets are used.”

“Following the consultation process Council staff will consider all feedback and prepare a report for community boards and the Council who will make the final decisions,” says Mr Thomas. “Submitters will be kept updated throughout the process.”

The speed limit changes consultation runs from 31 May to 21 June on have your say.
