Waimakariri wells surveyed to understand groundwater flow

31 May 2016

MEDIA RELEASE

Waimakariri wells surveyed to understand groundwater flow

Approximately 250 wells will be measured next week to model and understand the groundwater flow on the Waimakariri North and South banks.

The work being undertaken by Environment Canterbury scientists is intended to find out more about groundwater flow and directions.

Environment Canterbury Groundwater Science Manager Carl Hanson said the survey will look at both shallow and deep wells.

“The piezometric survey will focus on wells located on Waimakariri North and South banks to provide more information on water flows in Canterbury’s aquifer systems.”

“Our aim is to understand groundwater flow and the balance between ground and surface water interaction in the Waimakariri River area.”

Environment Canterbury is also measuring flows in a number of river and streams across the study area to gather additional information on river recharge to the groundwater system.

The Waimakariri well survey work will take place on Wednesday 8th June* and is a continuation of Environment Canterbury’s ongoing well field inspections.

Landowners with wells on their properties have been contacted by Environment Canterbury to advise them of the work.
