Love Food Hate Waste

Love Food Hate Waste

Our Council has joined the Love Food Hate Waste campaign to cut down on the amount of edible food that is thrown away in New Zealand.

The campaign has been launched by WasteMINZ, which is a group representing the waste and recovery sector in New Zealand.

The average New Zealand family throws away three full shopping trolleys of uneaten food into the rubbish bin every year - that's more than $560 of food going to waste per family and a total of $872 million for the whole country.

This is not only a waste of money, but food rotting in landfills is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

Our Council is among 59 local authorities in New Zealand taking part in the Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

The Love Food Hate Waste website is full of tips on how to cut down on food waste; from ideas such as storing bread in the freezer to handy recipes to help people get the most out of their food.

Well known chefs including Annabel Langbein, Alyson Gofton and Dr Libby Weaver have donated their favourite recipes for using up odds and ends to the website. To learn more visitwww.lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz

Queen's Birthday holiday kerbside reminder

Kerbside rubbish and recycling collections are a day later next week because of the Queen's Birthday public holiday on Monday 6 June.

If your collection is usually on a Tuesday, for example, it will be on Wednesday instead. And, next week is Week 1 in our fortnightly collection schedule.

If you're not sure when your rubbish and recycling is collected, check your kerbside recycling wheelie bin to see which day of the week your collection is and whether your area is Week 1 or 2 for recycling pick-up.

You can also find collections schedule by area on our web page www.tcdc.govt.nz/kerbside

Please get your official blue Council rubbish bags and recycling out by 7:30am.

Our refuse transfer stations (RTS) are open their usual hours on Saturday and Sunday and will be open late, until 7:30pm, on Monday - except the Thames RTS which will close at 5pm.

Check our RTS web page www.tcdc.govt.nz/rts for hours and locations of all our refuse transfer stations.
