Interested in sculpting with fire?

Do you have a burning ambition to build a sculpture out of wood and then set it alight?

Hutt City Council and Rotary Hutt City are putting out the call to any groups or individuals interested in participating in the 2016 Petone Winter Carnival – Fire Sculpture Exhibition on Saturday 6 August.

This year the Petone Winter Carnival celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Fire Sculptures have been a part of the Carnival for almost as long, this being their eighth year. They have become a key element of the Carnival, preceding the much-loved fireworks display. To mark this occasion the theme for this year’s sculpture exhibition is ‘Decades’, so artists are asked to take inspiration from a particular decade such as the 20s or 60s.

Harvey Reid of Rotary Hutt City says, “Building a fire sculpture is a lot of fun, the best ones really make use of the play of light and shadow that fire creates. We have four places available in the exhibition and we love to see new faces providing a sculpture. It’s great to see fresh and unique ideas coming from the community and showing off local creativity”.

If you’re interested in providing a sculpture, please contact Harvey Reid on 027 226 4414 or email harvey.reid@dieselgas.co.nz before Friday 1 July. You will need to provide a drawing or model of your planned sculpture.

Sculptures are 4m high and need to be planned around a 600mm by 600mm tower provided by Rotary Hutt City. The use of recycled timber is also encouraged.
