Fieldays: dry and mild - mostly

Wear your gumboots by all means - but Fieldays 2016 is shaping up to be mostly mild and dry.

NIWA, the official weather forecaster for Fieldays, is forecasting a large ridge of high pressure stretching across the Tasman Sea and covering New Zealand from Monday on. It will weaken briefly on Wednesday before strengthening again late in the week.

Opening day will be the coldest of the four-day event. As farmers descend en masse at Mystery Creek, near Hamilton, temperatures will be in the single digits but winds will be light.

Conditions will become more mild as the day continues, with a maximum temperature in the mid teens. A front might bring some passing afternoon or evening showers, potentially affecting outdoor exhibits as they wrap up the first day's business.

A gradual warming trend is likely for Thursday and Friday, allowing afternoon maximums to creep towards 16 or 17 degrees. Save for the passing sprinkle, Fieldays visitors will be graced with a blend of sunshine and clouds and a light to moderate breeze both days.

Overall, the odds favour good weather although a southerly breeze might cool things off slightly for the final day on Saturday, but abundant sunshine and light winds will make for prime exhibit viewing.

Visitors heading home on Saturday or Sunday should experience good travelling conditions.

Look for an updated Fieldays weather forecast from NIWA on Monday and be sure to visit the NIWA exhibit inside the main pavilion – look for the giant virtual waterfall!
