Twice The Fun: Make Sure The Family Sees An Intergalactic History of Pairs These School Holidays

What happens when you cross a popular psychedelic rock band from Wellington with a creative video artist and an experimental theatre director? An Intergalactic History of Pairs with the Orchestra of Spheres - an original, homegrown theatrical experience for the whole family!

Auckland Live is bringing a high-energy, interactive musical theatre masterpiece for people aged four to 94 to the Bruce Mason Centre this coming school holidays. An Intergalactic History of Pairs with Orchestra of Spheres opens Tuesday 19 July and runs until Saturday 23 July.

In its Wellington premiere in 2014, audiences loved the popular New Zealand band’s new children’s show - a dance party for young and old, which journeys into a multi-dimensional, magical world.

The theme is pairs and audiences will see double; from dancing lips, giant eyeballs and aliens from outer-space, all of whom come in pairs. There are limitless possibilities when you create two of everything! Audiences are encouraged to come in pairs and wear cosmic candy-coloured costumes (optional).

“Created with the whole family’s enjoyment in mind, one of Aotearoa’s most unique musical exports will transform the Bruce Mason Theatre into an intergalactic dance space. There is no sitting still when the music starts and making weird shapes adds to the fun - we invite children of all ages to experience first-hand the work of this team of New Zealand artists who continue to make waves internationally,” says Helaina Keeley, Auckland Live’s Manager, Programme Development.

An Intergalactic History of Pairs with the Orchestra of Spheres Director and renowned Auckland theatre director Stephen Bain says, “The history of pairs takes audiences on a theatrical intergalactic journey. Audiences will be propelled by the infectious sounds of a band that draws on traditional dance music to make new sounds that constantly feed into the melting pot of theatre magic.”

Originally commissioned for Capital E, the National Children's Festival of New Zealand, An Intergalactic History of Pairs was created in collaboration with Bain and videographer Erica Sklenars.

Orchestra of Spheres has become an international success story and one of Wellington's proudest musical offerings. The group regularly tours Europe, Asia and the USA.
