CHCH City Council Spends Up Big On Sky TV

CHCH City Council Spends Up Big On Sky TV

12 JUNE 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Research by the Taxpayers’ Union shows that Christchurch City Council was the second highest spender of all local authorities when it came to Sky TV, spending $36,086.74 on the subscription TV service in one year.

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“Our research found that Christchurch City Council is one of the largest spenders on Sky TV within central and local government, spending almost $37,000 of ratepayers’ money in the last financial year alone.”

“With the number of rateable properties having been reduced by the earthquakes and rebuild, the rates burden has increased on those whose homes remained standing. The fact that they’re shouldering the burden for Council staff to watch Sky TV only adds insult to injury.”

“In the post-earthquake environment, the influx of bureaucrats risks bringing Wellington’s culture of waste to the South Island’s largest city. It’s time the Council nipped this kind of wasteful spending in the bud and got on with the rebuild.”
