Chance to collect plants before demolition

Chance to collect plants before demolition

On Saturday 18 June, Council staff will be giving out free plants and flowers to members of the public at the entrance of the Fitzherbert Street Council building opposite the farmers market.

This event has come about as a farewell to the old administration building on Fitzherbert Street, which is set to be demolished and rebuilt starting in August.

Council Chief Executive, Judy Campbell says “We have some very well maintained gardens around the Fitzherbert building and this is an opportunity for people to take part of the old site with them”

Council staff will be on site to assist people who require more plants and there will be some designs of the new Awarua building available for public viewing.

“We want people to have a walk around the building, enjoy the gardens and see what our new and safe building will look like.” Said Ms Campbell

Flowers will be made available at the gardens surrounding the old administration building. Roses around the Lawson Field Theatre and rose garden will remain fully intact.

The event will start at 11:00am and a sausage sizzle will also be made available on the day.

Mayor Meng Foon added, “It is great to share and reuse the plants, some of the plants have been planted have been symbolic, so you could be talking home a piece of history.”

This gardening day is part of a larger group of planting/replanting community events that Council is supporting.

Council have two community planting days that are taking place on 17 and 19 June at Alfred Cox Park as part of the Waikanae stream clean-up.
