Today's evacuation of WCC buildings update

Today's evacuation of Wellington's Central Library and Council buildings - update as at 5.00pm

Wellington Central Library has reopened to the public following this afternoon’s evacuation incident. Police were quickly on the scene and have done a thorough check of the buildings. All buildings have now been ‘swept’.

Wellington City Council’s service centre, nearby in Civic Square, remains closed to the public but will reopen as normal at 8am tomorrow.

The Civic Square underground car park has also reopened to the public.

The ‘suspicious package’ was not found to be a public safety risk.

City Council Chief Executive Kevin Lavery says he is pleased at the quick and calm manner in which the buildings were evacuated. Public safety was a priority – he also thanked Police for their quick and thorough work.
