Watercare’s a winner in sustainability reporting

Initiatives by Watercare to integrate sustainability into all aspects of its business have been recognised at the Australasian Reporting Awards (ARA) in the form of a Sustainability Reporting Award.

Watercare’s broad focus on sustainability within its 2015 annual report received the top honour ahead of two Australian finalists – the City of Melbourne and Glen Eira City Council – in the public sector category.

The ARAs provide an opportunity for organisations to benchmark their reports against the ARA criteria based on world best practice for preparing reports.

Watercare chief executive Raveen Jaduram says Watercare is committed to providing water and wastewater services using environmentally sustainable methods.

“This award not only acknowledges the sustainable work we are doing but how we report it. For our efforts to be acknowledged on an international scale is fantastic.”

He says it is important a company like Watercare measures its reporting against clear, objective standards, and the ARA is a well-established and widely respected organisation.

“We’ve been tested by the best in the business so to be placed at the forefront of current thinking and practice is extremely satisfying for all of us at Watercare.”

Some of Watercare’s sustainable initiatives include using locally sourced steel pipe in the 28-kilometre Hunua 4 watermain project, improvements to wastewater treatment processes to improve surrounding marine and estuarine environments, and generating electricity at its two major wastewater treatment plants.

This is the company’s second Sustainability Report Award, having won the category for its 2013 annual report. Watercare was a finalist in the category for its 2014 annual report.

Watercare’s 2015 annual report is also the winner of a gold award, the company’s 11th in as many years, which recognises overall excellence in annual reporting and high quality coverage.
