Take a fresh look at standing for council

Aucklanders are invited to take a fresh look at standing as a candidate in the upcoming local elections in October.

Candidate Week (27 June to 1 July) is a national initiative by New Zealand’s local councils to help inspire potential candidates, and get them thinking about representing their communities.

Auckland Council is supporting the awareness week with practical tips, delivered through social media and our website. The council is also providing information through its community networks to people interested in learning more about candidacy.

“We want people to have a better understanding of the processes for running for council, so they are well-informed,” says Auckland Council Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske. “Many Aucklanders want to contribute to their local community, so this is a good time for those people who may be interested to look at their options.”

Elected roles for council include local boards, councillors and mayor. Voters will also get to choose district health board representatives and licensing trust members in the areas where these exist.

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll.

Nominations for candidates open on Friday 15 July 2016 and close at noon on Friday 12 August 2016. Voting documents are posted out from Friday 16 September 2016 and must be received by the Electoral Officer by noon on Election Day, Saturday 8 October 2016.

For further information on standing as a candidate, visit showyourlove.co.nz or contact the Auckland Council Electoral Office on 09 973 5212 or 0800 922 822, or email info@electionservices.co.nz

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
