SH1 down to one lane, Kapiti - Paekakariki - Wellington

Drivers can expect significant delays on SH1 north of Wellington due to a gas main leak.

Stop/go signs are operating between Beach Road, Paekakariki and Whareroa Road, Mackays Crossing.

A single lane is open for five minutes northbound and five minutes southbound.

This is pattern is then repeated.

Police do not know when the road will fully re-open.

Drivers with destinations north of Kapiti should consider using SH2 as an alternative route.

The advice is the same for motorists coming into the Wellington region.
