Activation offers free workshop on volunteer engagement for community groups
Learning how to engage volunteers is the focus of a free workshop that Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team are hosting for community groups and sports clubs.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 30 JUN 2016—Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team has acquired the services of Sport Wellington’s Volunteer Strategy Senior Advisor, Ken Allen, to run a free workshop for Upper Hutt’s local clubs and community groups on Monday 18 July.
The aim of the workshop is to help these groups to develop a ‘volunteer plan,’ which will focus on recognising and retaining volunteers, and build strategies to recruit new volunteers.
“A recent club survey indicated that only 6% of our clubs saw their relationship with volunteers as a strength, and 30% indicated that they needed help in the area of volunteer recruitment,” says David King, Activation’s Clubs and Schools Advisor. “This, combined with the fact that 59% of the clubs do no volunteer or committee training, indicated to us that we could significantly help our clubs by providing such an opportunity.”
Attendees can expect to develop some great ideas and strategies for volunteer recognition, retention, and recruitment. They should also gain a better understanding of why people volunteer and how to build on that rationale.
Mr King also commented, “This will be a great session for those working in clubs, active recreation groups, and schools to get some great ideas. The workshop will also provide participants with the opportunity to be hands-on and begin developing their own volunteer plan.”
