Auckland’s next economy won’t be about money
Auckland’s next economy won’t be about
money
Next week a new member organisation,
Social Enterprise Auckland, will officially launch to mark
the increased significance of organisations that count their
success in sustainable social impact. The event, Beyond
Purpose: Making Money Count will bring together social
entrepreneurs, funders and policy-makers at Auckland
University Business School. They will shape the mandate for
Social Enterprise Auckland as a hub for inspiration,
information and connection, for this rapidly growing sector.
Dr Jamie Newth is an SEA Board member and the
Executive Director of Soul Capital, which invests in social
enterprises and social businesses. He says, “Now is the
time for Auckland to nurture an economy for tomorrow - one
which is inclusive, sustainable, and actually delivers the
outcomes we demand from a modern economy. We’ll all share
in the benefits if we empower and represent entrepreneurs
and innovators wanting positive change in our city”.
Social enterprises use business models for a social
purpose such as better health, equality, education or
environment. Conscious Consumers, Lovenotes and The Pallet
Kingdom are a few of the social enterprises involved in the
event. Organisations like these are successfully meeting a
range of community needs. In the UK there are an estimated
70,000 social enterprises that contribute £55 billion to
the UK economy. In recognition of the potential value to
local communities, Social Enterprise Auckland was initiated
by collaboration between Auckland Council, Akina Foundation,
academics, funders and practitioners.
