Dog control changes come into force

Dunedin (Friday, 1 July 2016) – Changes to where dogs can be taken in Dunedin, along with when they need to be on a leash, come into force today.

DCC Manager Environment Health and Animal Services Ros MacGill says Dunedin’s new Dog Control Policy and Bylaw 2016 means more areas are available for dogs to be exercised off the leash, but there are several key changes which dog owners need to be aware of.

“Dogs will continue to be allowed off a leash on DCC owned sportsgrounds in areas not marked as playing fields, but must be on a leash when games are being played. They will also be allowed in DCC owned cemeteries while on a leash, although this will be reviewed in 12 months.

“Restrictions in beach areas also vary. Dogs will be permitted on a leash in paved areas of St Clair Esplanade and must also be on a leash east of the main access track at Smaills Beach. The areas around Brighton Beach where dogs are prohibited have also been extended. However, the walking track from the Brighton bridge to the start of the beach is now open to dogs, allowing them access to the Otokia River.”

Dogs will also be permitted off leash on Peninsula Beach Road in Port Chalmers, however, in all areas dogs must be placed on a leash within 20m of protected wildlife.

Ms MacGill says dogs can continue to be exercised off the leash in a wide range of areas, including Waikouaiti Beach, Bethunes Gully (on leash in the picnic area), Whare Flat, the Ocean Beach Domain and at the seven dog exercise parks. It is important owners remember they must have their dogs under control at all times, whether or not they are on a leash, and they must clean up after them.

Dog registration renewal forms are being sent out and they will include an information pamphlet outlining the changes. Signs are being placed in all the affected areas and Animal Services Officers will also be out and about advising dog owners of the new rules.
