Repairs work underway at Turihaua Point

Work is underway to repair a section of State Highway 35 damaged during severe weather in 2015.

As a result of Cyclone Pam in March 2015, sections of road along Turihaua Point, 17 km north east of Gisborne, were impacted by erosion, causing dropouts.

The repair project involves placing 1000 m3 of fill (known as rock riprap) to repair and protect the road from further damage.

“Since last year’s storm we have had temporary safety barriers along the edge of the road,” Dave Hadfield, General Manager, Tairawhiti Roads says. “As well as repairing the two known erosion sites, we’re taking the opportunity to repair several other sites within the Turihaua Point area that also have dropouts caused by erosion.”

“Depending on the weather, we expect the work to be finished mid-July. While crews are working on the road, there will be a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we undertake this important maintenance and repair work. Keeping to the temporary speed limit will keep motorists and our crew safe,” Mr Hadfield says.
