A Mystery to be Solved at Canterbury Museum

Mystery Night at the Museum takes place in the July school holidays and promises a fun time for young detectives visiting Canterbury Museum during the four nights of July 12, 14, 19 and 21.

A crime scene in the foyer reveals the ‘Waitaha Diamond’ has been stolen. Following the theme of a ‘whodunnit’ the Museum team have created clues throughout the galleries leading families on a journey of discovery as they eliminate suspects and narrow down their search for the diamond thief.

“For over ten years we have been opening at night for these popular events”, says Anthony Wright, Canterbury Museum Director. “And we still hear from so many people that visiting the Museum at night is one of their favorite things to do!”

Across four nights of the event the Museum welcomes more than 5,000 people, many dressed in costume, who spend the evening prowling around the galleries with torches and enjoying the experience of being in the Museum after hours.

The opportunity to win prizes for themed costumes and for solving the ‘whodunnit’ are also a big drawcard.

Children (aged 14 and under) are invited to take a photo of themselves dressed as a sleuth, detective or villain while they are at the Museum, and to post it on Canterbury Museum’s Facebook page to be in to win a prize.

The free KidsFest events begin on Tuesday 12 July and continue on Thursday 14, Tuesday 19 and finish on Thursday 21 July from 5.30 pm to 8 pm. Entry is free, but donations are appreciated. Visitors are asked to bring a torch. The Museum Store and Cafe will be open for a late night snack. Under 14 year olds must be supervised by an adult.
