Local hospitals near full capacity

Capital & Coast DHB is encouraging people who are unwell or who have minor injuries to seek medical help from their GP in the first instance, as both Wellington Regional Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital are currently operating at or near full capacity.

“Our staff are working around the clock to provide quality healthcare and treatment, but the high volumes we’re seeing at our emergency departments is resulting in longer waiting times for patients with non-urgent illnesses and injuries,” said Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Shawn Sturland.

Both hospitals experience higher occupancy during the winter months. Chest infections and other illnesses are more common in cold weather, and there is an increase in sport-related injuries such as sprains and muscle strains.

GPs and practice nurses can treat a range of health problems – from stomach bugs and asthma attacks, to stitching cuts and treating sprains – and can schedule urgent appointments for those who are very sick and in a lot of pain.

Unless it is an emergency, people should contact their GP, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice. People should still call 111 for an ambulance if they have a medical emergency such as trouble breathing, or serious head or chest pain.

“I’d like to thank the public for their understanding and patience, and our clinicians and staff who are working hard to see every patient as soon as possible.”
