Wellington Chamber delighted at formal links with Canberra

Wellington Chamber of Commerce is delighted at the signing today of a memorandum of understanding with the Canberra Business Chamber.

Chief Executive John Milford said the ceremony marked a formal strengthening of the relationship between the cities which would be further cemented when Singapore Airlines begins its direct flights in September.

The memorandum was signed in the Wellington Mayor’s Office by the President of the Wellington Chamber, Peter Cullen, and the Chief Executive of the Canberra Business Chamber, Robyn Hendry, and was witnessed by Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, and representatives of business from both cities.

It says the Chambers will focus on promoting trade, tourism and business between the regions, including sharing information on trade, economic and technology information, and will promote seminars, forums and exhibitions in each other’s region.

Mr Milford said the relationship would be a real business-to-business arrangement where cooperation and swapping of ideas was key.

“We now have MoUs with both the Canberra Business Chamber and the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (Singapore). With the flights between the three cities due to start shortly, they are logical markets for our businesses to want to have close links with.

“This relationship opens new doors for businesses seeking to export to Canberra and Australia. I’m delighted our counterparts in Canberra also see collaboration as valuable to the future of the private sectors in our cities.

“I’m convinced this will be a fruitful and enduring relationship of mutual benefit. The fact that we’re both capital cities will not be lost on the arrangement, and is likely to only enhance it.

“The Wellington Chamber is looking forward to hosting later this year the first of the annual events to be held alternately between each city. I’m sure these will become a real feature of the relationship.”
