Mayor leads delegation to Singapore

Mayor leads delegation to Singapore

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown will be leading a delegation to Singapore from today, strengthening the Capital’s connections with Singapore, opening doors for increased trade, migration and student numbers and showcasing Wellington to an important global audience at the World Cities Summit.

The Mayor has taken up the opportunity to promote Wellington at the Summit, a platform for government leaders and industry experts to address liveable and sustainable city challenges, form new relationships and share integrated urban solutions.

“The Summit brings together many civic leaders and organisations from around the world, and I’m excited about showcasing some of the exciting initiatives in Wellington, such as our resilience programme and our Smart Cityactivities.

“This is the third time I’ve attended the World Cities Summit as Mayor, so to be invited back shows how strongly Wellington’s innovative strategies resonate with civic leaders around the world.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting with Dr Lena Chan to discuss Wellington’s Our Natural Capital initiatives and share our knowledge and principles of biophilic cities.”

The Mayor will also join Wellington business organisations to explore trade opportunities with Singapore partners and further develop the relationship with Singapore Airlines.

“Launching 20 September, the new Singapore Airlines Capital Express route will link Singapore, Canberra and Wellington, so this trip is well-timed to explore how we best capitalise on the benefits of the new connection to Asia,” says the Mayor.

“It will boost visitor numbers into New Zealand’s capital city, open doors for further investment, attract more international students, provide a faster route to market for local fresh food producers and better connections for business travellers.”

The Mayor is presenting at World Cities Summit on the topic of Innovative Governance: Inventing the Toolbox for Better Cities, discussing how cities are re-organising their urban systems and rethinking their approaches to civic design.

The cost of the Mayor’s accommodation and meals will be covered by Wellington International Airport and the World Cities Summit, with the costs for flights being met by the Council.
