Coromandel Roading Update 5 - as of 3pm


Road closures as of 3:00pm:

If travelling to the eastern seaboard of the Coromandel north of Whangamata from outside the district, note that until further notice the only way is via the Thames Coast.

State Highways

SH25 Tairua township to SH25/SH25a intersection CLOSED due to flooding (Hikuai Flats). There is still a great deal of water here and the road may not be open today.
SH25a Kopu – Hikuai OPEN
SH2 Karangahake Gorge OPEN - Stop / Go management in place
SH25 Whangapoua Road OPEN - Stop / Go management in place
Local Roads

Tapu-Coroglen OPEN - one lane and light vehicles only.
Kennedy Bay Roads CLOSED due to slip until further notice. This road may not open today due to the difficult nature of repairing the slip.
Hikuai Settlement Rd CLOSED due to flooding until further notice. This road may not open today due to high volume of water in area.
Extreme caution required surface flooding on many roads.

School buses that did not run this morning are not running this afternoon:

• Tairua/Pauanui to Thames High
• Tairua/Hikuai to Opoutere School and Whangamata Area School
• Tairua to Mercury Bay Area School
• Coroglen to Mercury Bay Area School
• Mill Creek to Mercury Bay Area School
• 309 to Mercury Bay Area School

The Intercity service between Whitianga and Thames (both directions) was cancelled this afternoon.

Rivers

Karangahape River high 14.924m - river levels now down to 14.6m.
Kauaeranga River high 8.675m - river level now down to 7.5m.
Tairua River high peaked at 5.0m currently at 3.2m – highest level in 3 years. Peak flow 530 cumecs per second (for comparison the current flow of the Waikato River is 270 cumecs per second)
Extreme caution please stay clear of swollen rivers.
