Construction to start on Thames Indoor Sports Facility

Construction to start on Thames Indoor Sports Facility

Approval has been given by our Council and Thames Community Board to proceed with construction of the new Thames Indoor Sports Facility.

With fundraising commitments, detailed designs for construction, and Council approvals all in place, arrangements with the Ministry of Education and contractors are now being finalised prior to commencement of construction at the facility's Thames High School location.

Contractors are expected to establish their operations on site next week.

The new facility has received an overwhelming show of support by the community in surpassing fundraising expectations.

In addition to public grants of $850,000 and Thames High School's commitment of $440,000 by July last year, pledges had exceeded the initial community fundraising target of $265,000.

This project is part of a programme of three Active Thames 2018 projects (including the Porritt Park Skate and Scooter Park, and Rhodes Park projects).

Thames Community Board has also allocated funding for a feasibility study for a regional swimming pool for consideration in the next Ten Year Plan.

Active Thames spokesperson Mary Hamilton is thrilled the physical work is ready to begin. "We'd like to thank the amazing sponsors (local and national) for their backing," she says.

"It is as a result of all these supporters' willingness to back the three big Active Thames Projects that the town will soon be able to offer so much more to its active residents young and not so young."
