Candidates encouraged to stand for council

Candidates encouraged to stand for council

Dunedin (Wednesday, 13 July 2016) – Anyone considering standing in upcoming council elections is encouraged to attend an information evening to learn more about what it’s like to be on Council, what council does and how much work is involved.

Potential candidates will get insights into how a council operates and what is expected from councillors and community board members from Council Chief Executives Sue Bidrose (DCC) and Peter Bodeker (ORC) at the Municipal Chambers on Wednesday 20 July at 7pm.

Potential candidates will also get relevant information including nomination forms and information on the nomination process and campaigning.

Dr Bidrose says the role of a local politician is an important one for everyone who lives in Dunedin.

“How we perform as a council impacts our communities. The better we do, the better the outcomes for our residents. Local elections are an opportunity for anyone with a passion for our community and strong leadership skills to put their name forward and help shape the future direction of our city.”

Nominations for candidates wishing to stand for the Dunedin City Council, community boards and the Otago Regional Council open this Friday (15 July).

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand in the election so long as they are a New Zealand citizen and are enrolled to vote.

The names of candidates will be published on the DCC website as nominations are received. Candidate profiles will be published after nominations close at noon on Friday 12 August.

Candidate information and nomination forms is available at www.dunedin.govt.nz/elections or call 03 477 4000.

Candidates can also get further information from Local Government New Zealand at
