Totara Reserve to receive new playground

MEDIA RELEASE

Friday 15 July, 2016

Totara Reserve to receive new playground

The Region’s only Regional Park is getting a new ‘back to roots’ playground following requests from the local community.

Horizons Regional Council manages Totara Reserve and ring fenced $20,000 from the 2015-16 financial year for the project to be completed by the end of October.

“In addition to the Council’s financial contribution we approached external agencies requesting further help funding the playground,” says biosecurity and habitat protection manager Bill Martyn.

“We’re very grateful for the support we have received from Eastern Central Community Trust, Mainland Trust, BlueSky Community Trust, and Lion Foundation, who together have contributed $46,000 for the new playground.”

“We’ve recently been giving Totara Reserve a bit of a facelift by upgrading tracks and erecting new signage around the Reserve. The existing playground was not up to scratch, and renovation costs were unrealistic, so we took the opportunity to start fresh following requests from the local community.”

“When it came to designing the playground we really wanted something that would be enjoyed for years to come, and was unique to Totara Reserve. We invited Awahou School pupils to help with the initial concept stage, meaning the final design has essentially been created by kids, for kids,” says Mr Martyn.

The new adventure playground has been designed to meet all needs, including young children and those with disabilities.

Key features include a low rope balance bridge, a mounded log climb and play zone, a group focused balance disc, and a basket swing.

Playground construction will start in late July and be undertaken by local contractors Outerlife Landscape with the project due for completion in October.

Mr Martyn hopes to see it completed in time for the start of the 2016-17 summer camping season with a celebratory public open day on Labour Weekend.
