A bold leap forward on the Kapiti Coast

"Economic development has taken a bold leap forward on the Kapiti Coast," says Mayoral candidate Gavin Welsh.

Council has endorsed a new governance structure to oversee the implementation and effectiveness of the District's Economic Development Strategy.

The strategy has been developed and implemented over the last 2 years by representatives from Iwi, the Chamber of Commerce, Electra, and the Council.

"Many hundreds of volunteer hours have been dedicated by the group towards promoting economic development in the district," said Cr. Welsh, who Chairs the Economic Development Leadership Forum. "It's fantastic to see the next logical step being taken as the group matures."

An appointment panel will receive applications from interested parties, and a recommendation to Council should see the appointment of the Independent Chair in the near future.

From there, industry representatives from the education, tourism, age care sectors etc, a representative from WREDA, along with a modest representation from Council, will continue to build momentum behind the strategy's implementation and specific projects.

"The Kapiti Coast Chamber of Commerce sees the establishment of this leadership group as a critical step in positioning Kapiti for growth,” says Chair, Liz Koh.

“Over the last two years three of our members, along with other key stakeholders, have provided significant input into the District's Economic Development Strategy. Putting a formal structure and resource in place means we can now get vital projects underway to attract new business to Kapiti.”

Also, Trevor Daniel, former Chair of Kapiti Grey Power said "This initiative was the biggest step forward in economic development in the 16 years I have been interested in Council affairs," said Mr. Daniel.

"Strengthening our partnership with the business community to boost our local economy, delivering jobs and prosperity to the Coast, remains one of my top priorities," says Welsh. "I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude to the members of the leadership forum for their outstanding contribution towards the districts exciting and prosperous future," he said.
