Free same zone bus transfers for GoCard users

25 July 2016.

Simplified fare structure to offer free same zone bus transfers for GoCard users

Dunedin’s bus network is being simplified, with a new five-zone fare structure replacing the current seven-zone structure from 15 August.

The new structure (which includes the Dunedin-Palmerston service) will reduce the number of fare change points, making it easier for users to immediately see how much it will cost to travel to their destination.

GoCard users will be able to transfer buses within the same zone for free, removing the charge for changing services under the current fare structure. A 30-minute time limit applies to transfers.

ORC manager support services Gerard Collings says most customers should pay less for travel with a GoCard than they do under the current fare structure.

“The new system will offer greater value for GoCard users withthe new free same-zone transfer,” Mr Collings said.

”For example, someone travelling from Mosgiel to Cargill’s Corner daily could save $35.70 a week using free same-zone transfers,” he said.

The new fare zones are part of a series of changes adopted in the Otago Regional Council regional public transport plan and 2015-2025 Long Term Plan to streamline the Dunedin bus network.

Information on the new fare zones and other upcoming changes to the bus network can be found at www.orc.govt.nz/buses. An information brochure outlining the changes and an updated 2016 timetable will be distributed to Dunedin residences in late July.
