Coromandel classic multi-sport race returns in August

Tom Gethin enjoys the Coromandel Classic multisport race so much, he’s taken over the company.

Having been ‘handed the keys’ in July, Tom says the event offers a great mix of trail running and bike courses over a weekend that really tests your metal. He acknowledges because last year’s Classic was canceled, numbers may be down this year, but intends to build it up to be better than ever in years to come. The event is traditionally well-represented by the New Zealand mult-isport community.

Tom moved to New Zealand from his native Scotland five years ago. With a background in rowing, triathlon and half ironman events, Tom’s first multisport event was the Coromandel Classic. Moving into event organising was a natural progression, following contribution as a club committee member and triathlon official. The Coromandel Classic is one of three races organised by Podium Events.

The Coromandel Classic offers plenty of excitement to those up for a challenge. There are two events; Multisport and Duathlon, comprising of up to four Legs over two days, incorporating mountain biking, trail running, kayaking and road cycling. In its 16th year, it is a well-known and well-timed even on the multisport calendar, and somewhat of a rite of passage for people training for the Coast to Coast. The weekend event requires a dedicated support crew, and the camaraderie of competitors, crew and spectators all make for a terrific atmosphere across the Coromandel.

A good place for spectators to enjoy the buzz of the event is during the kayak to bike transition at Cooks Beach on Day One. On Sunday morning at Tairua Wharf, Tom says there’ll be a ‘bit of a buzz’ as the combined energy of seasoned racers and newbies set out on their mission to complete Day Two.

Coromandel communities are right behind the new ownership of the event, with support received from TCDC, DOC and Traffic Management. Major sponsors this year include Mac’s Beer and Em’s Cookies. Local supporters and organisations who would like to get involved are also invited to make contact.

Of course, the other way for locals to get involved is to take part. Being right on our doorstep, it is a good value for money event for Coromandel locals. The event offers categories for individuals and teams. If you’ve been competing in trail running events around the Coromandel and are looking for a ‘next-level’ challenge, Tom suggests you get involved. Encouraging a friend and joining a team is a great way to begin.

Online entries close 22nd August for 2016’s Coromandel Classic 26 August-Sunday 28 August.
