Wellington Chamber honours past President

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is deeply saddened by the loss of Mr Daniel Lewis, former President of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, who passed away in Melbourne last Tuesday at the age of 86.

Mr Lewis was President of the Chamber in 1987, a turbulent time for the Wellington and New Zealand economies, says John Milford, Chief Executive of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

“His service to the Chamber and the Wellington business community is greatly appreciated. We offer our deepest condolences to his extended family.
“Mr Lewis provided leadership and resolve during a rapidly changing business environment which saw higher interest rates, inflation, unemployment, government deficits and a higher dollar seriously affecting business performance and confidence.

“During his time as President, the Wellington Chamber completed the sale of its Wakefield Street property, the additional income enabling improved member services, and assumed administration of the NZ Chambers of Commerce under a three-year contract.

“Mr Lewis leaves a lasting legacy. Without his stewardship during troubling times the history books may have told a different story.

“On behalf of the Wellington business community, I am truly grateful for his service.”

Mr Lewis also served as President of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation and New Zealand Institute of Chartered Secretaries.

Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
