Awards recognise high performing youths in Hastings

The sixth annual Hastings District Council Youth Potential awards will reward young people from around the district who have shown commitment to achieving their goals.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held this evening (Tuesday 2nd August 2016) in the Hastings District Council Chambers. The ceremony will celebrate the achievement and success of young people in provider programmes, with a focus on youth from Hastings.

Mayor, Lawrence Yule says "It is important that we celebrate the success of our young people. Many of these youths are supported by their whanau, schools and community organisations and have shown that with strong support and encouragement, they can reach their potential."

Lawrence Yule says “These awards will recognize those Rangatahi who have achieved in the face of personal adversity, in the hope that they will serve as an inspiration to others.”

The nominees all take part in a Youth Provider programme or service, are aged between 13 and 19 and currently attend school. Seven individuals and one group will be among the recipients in 2016.

The award categories are:

Tane (male) and wahine (female): recognise their efforts in continuing with school despite having to overcome some adversity and/or hardship at some point during their young lives. The Youth Potential Awards acknowledge them as a rangatahi who continue to positively engage in both school and their community.

Roopu: refers to a group or agency who work with young people. The award recognises their efforts as a service often working with young people who are hard to reach or defined as youth at risk.

The evening will begin with a welcome from Wayne Ormsby, followed by an address from Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule and guest speakers, Aidan Warren & Tineka Tuala-Fata.

The Youth Potential Awards will be presented in the Council Chambers, 207 Lyndon Road East, Hastings at 6pm on Tuesday 2nd August 2016
