Live radio broadcast from library teen space

Live radio broadcast from library teen space

Dunedin (Wednesday, 3 August 2016) – Visitors to Dunedin City Library’s Teen Space on Monday will have the opportunity to take part in a live radio broadcast.

The 8 August event is part of nationwide campaign The Big Listen – a celebration of community access stations.

A panel of young hosts from Otago Access Radio’s (OAR FM) Youth Zone will broadcast live-to-air from Teen Space between 4pm and 5pm, presenting a mix of music, interviews and discussion.

OAR FM Youth Co-ordinator Dominic Angelo-Laloli says the show will be an interactive event, designed to promote interest in the weekday Youth Zone’s shows and the free training and airtime the station made available to those aged 8 - 22 years.

“Bringing Youth Zone out of the studio and into the library’s Teen Space is exciting because it will enable young people to see first hand how a radio show is put together and give them a taste of what it would be like to make their own programmes.”

There are 12 community access radio stations in New Zealand, each of which provides the facilities, training and infrastructure to enable citizens to make their own radio. This made the library space an especially appropriate setting for The Big Listen event.

“Access radio stations like ours are a community resource, in much the same way as a library is. We’re very grateful to the library staff who have supported this chance to share what we offer with a wider audience.”

The Youth Zone team and OAR FM staff will remain at Teen Space at the conclusion of the broadcast, to answer questions about Youth Zone and to share their own experiences with those who wished to learn more.

Dunedin City Library’s Storypit will be the venue for a second The Big Listen event, aimed at pre-school and primary-aged children.

On Saturday, 20 August, from 11.30am to12.30pm, award-winning children’s radio presenter Marchell “Captain Cornflakes” Linzey will host Storytime at the Storypit, recording excerpts for his Saturday morning show Space Station Kiwi.

The programme will go to air at 7am on Saturday, 27 August, to launch the Dunedin City Library’s Storylines Family Fun Day. This event brings children’s authors, illustrators, storytellers and performers together for a day of family-friendly activities.
