Statement regarding rail to the North Shore

NZ Transport Agency statement regarding rail to the North Shore

The NZ Transport Agency says suggestions that it is focused on a road only solution for a future tunnel across Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour are misleading and inaccurate.

“We are 100 per cent committed to providing Aucklanders with a future multi-modal transport corridor that would work in conjunction with the Auckland Harbour Bridge,” says Ernst Zöllner, the Agency’s Auckland Regional Director.

The Transport Agency and Auckland Transport are currently investigating which modes of rapid transit will best service the growing needs of the city along with future roading requirements. This information will feed into the Additional Waitematā Harbour Crossing project and ensure the protected route enables and is fully integrated with a future public transport network.

The Transport Agency is currently working towards protecting the required land (Notice of Requirement), so that when a future crossing is needed the land is available. It is not intended to finalise the form and detail of the project.
