Weather update #3 - 10/8/16 4.30pm

Weather update #3

4.30pm. Heavy rain continues to fall on the eastern side of the Coromandel but we still have no road closures, major flooding or slips to report.

The next high tide is at midnight.

"We are still asking everyone to take care on the roads, don't travel if you don't need to and also prepare for rising river and stream levels," says Civil Defence Controller Garry Towler.

"We have also been ringing around our more at-risk, isolated communities to check on how they are faring in the weather, and there's no issues being raised with us yet," says Mr Towler.

Met Service says the bad weather is sticking around the north eastern side of the Coromandel untiltomorrow afternoon.

Kennedy Bay repair works following April storm

In April we had to close sections of the Kennedy Bay Rd, north of Coromandel Town after slips caused by a heavy rain.

We've just finished the roading design work to permanently repair the road and physical work will now start. We expect the repairs to be all completed by the end of November.

The physical work includes grouted soil nails to stabilise the slope, both below and above the road, in the section closest to Coromandel Town. An anchored post and panel retaining wall will also be installed below the road on the Coromandel side of the Tokatea hill summit section.

There has also been repair work going on from the April event that saw a washout at the Fairy Falls site.

"Council approved a $1.85M budget spread over the 2015/16 and 2016/17 years to enable this storm damage work to be completed," says Roading Manager Matt Busch.

The cost of the Kennedy Bay Road work is supported by an NZTA subsidy.
