Lambton Quay crane lift on tomorrow

A crane will be set up on Lambton Quay overnight tonight so the steel frame for the new Cable Car Lane canopy can be lifted into position tomorrow (Saturday).

The work, which will close the Willis Street end of Lambton Quay to traffic, was scheduled to happen last weekend but had to be postponed because of forecast high winds.

With only light winds expected tomorrow, Council project manager Anna Harley says the work can go ahead this weekend.

The section of Lambton Quay between Willis Street and Brandon Street will be closed to traffic and buses from 8pm tonight (Friday 12 August) so the trolley bus wires can be taken down and the crane set up on the road outside Cable Car Lane.

Traffic and bus detours will be in place until 5am on Monday 15 August.

The bus detours mean there will be less parking than usual in Brandon and Panama streets.

Businesses will be trading as usual and pedestrians will be able to use the part of Lambton Quay that is closed to traffic.

The temporary bus service to the Cable Car Lookout will leave from outside Farmers.

Anna Harley says the crane work is an essential part of building the elegant new glass canopy that will replace the leaky old one that was removed last month.

“The new canopy will let more light in and help make the lane a lot more attractive for the more than a million people a year who travel on the Cable Car,” she says.

“This is our second most popular tourist destination, a key transport link for locals, and right in the heart of Lambton Quay – so we want to improve the experience and make sure this lane is another we can be proud of.”

The work is being carried out over the weekend to minimise disruption.
