28 people nominated, 4 elected unopposed to WRC seats

MEDIA RELEASE

12 August 2016

28 people nominated, 4 elected unopposed to Waikato Regional Council seats

Nominations have been received from 28 people for Waikato Regional Council seats in six general and two Māori constituencies in this year’s local body elections.

But at the close of nominations at midday today the number of candidates did not exceed the number of vacancies in the Waihou and Waipa-King Country general constituencies.

Because of this, four people have been elected unopposed and regional council voting will therefore not occur in their constituencies. They are Stu Husband, Stu Kneebone, Alan Livingston and Hugh Vercoe. Regional council chief executive Vaughan Payne has this afternoon contacted them to offer his congratulations.

However, voting will take place in the Hamilton, Taupō, Thames-Coromandel and Waikato general constituencies, and in the Ngā Tai ki Uta and Ngā Hau e Whā Māori constituencies.

In March the council decided that candidate names will appear in fully random order on voting papers. This means the order of candidate names will be arranged randomly for each voting document.

This year’s elections use the first past the post (FPP) system, where you tick the candidate/s you would like to vote for.

Regional councillors are elected by voters enrolled on the residential and ratepayers rolls in their constituency. Everyone correctly enrolled by today will receive their voting papers in the mail between 16 and 21 September.
