Nominations close for mayor and councillors

Nominations close for mayor and councillors

12 August 2016

Nominations for mayor and councillors in Palmerston North have officially closed as of twelve noon today. There are two nominations for mayor and 28 nominations for councillors.

The election campaign will now get into full swing.

“The Palmerston North City Council will shortly be hosting a series of meetings at the Convention Centre on 17, 23 and 29 August to give voters the opportunity to meet the candidates ahead of the election on 8 October,” says John Annabell, Electoral Officer for Palmerston North.

“This is an opportunity for you to come along and hear from the people who are standing and find out their views on the issues that matter to you and your community.”

The election will be conducted by postal vote and voting papers will be sent to all electors whose names appear on the final electoral roll. Voting papers will be delivered between 16 and 21 September and must be returned by 12 noon Saturday 8 October.

The single transferable voting (STV) electoral system will be used again this year. This means electors will be asked to rank the candidates according to preference rather than ticking the names of the candidates they wish to vote for.

Today is also the last day to enrol to vote. Anyone who has not yet enrolled can do so by calling 0800 36 76 56 or visiting www.elections.org.nz

Details of the meet the candidates meetings are as follows:

23 August 2016, midday: Meet the mayoral candidates
29 August 2016, 5pm to 7pm: Meet the candidates expo
