First water mains swabbing completed

Last night Palmerston North City Council completed swabbing one of the city’s two trunk water mains from the Turitea dam supply.

The work is part of the annual cleaning programme to remove sediment in the water pipes and minimise water discolouration.

Council staff started preparing at 6pm yesterday and finished just before 12.30am today.

Council water asset engineer Dora Luo says they encountered unexpected operational issues affecting the supply to Aokautere and Linton for a short time.

“Our apologies to those people who were affected,” she said.

Council has flushed the network pipes in the area to clear air and discoloured water.

“Residents with discoloured water should run all cold water taps in the house to clean out the pipes,” Ms Luo advised. “If your water is still discoloured after 15 minutes, please contact the Council on 06 356 8199.”

Council plans to swab the second of the two trunk water mains in September. However as the work can only be carried out when the flow rate and turbidity of the Manawatū River reaches a certain level, the date will be confirmed closer to the time.
