Police seek witnesses to Eastern Bay of Plenty arsons

Police are appealing for information following three suspicious fires in recent months in the Te Kaha and Waihau Bay areas.

Detective Sergeant Darren Thomas of Eastern Bay of Plenty Police says the fires burnt the residential properties to the ground:

“Thankfully, no-one was injured but a significant amount of valuable property was destroyed.

“Police are investigating the fires and at this stage, two men have been arrested.”

A 71-year-old man and his 30-year-old son have been charged with arson in relation to a fire in Hakota near Te Kaha on Saturday 23 April 2016.

Police are following other lines of enquiry in relation to two other fires on State Highway 35.

One was on Saturday 16 July in Waihau Bay and the other was on Friday 12 August in Te Kaha.

“We are very grateful to the local community who have provided valuable information so far, which has allowed us to progress these investigations.

“We will continue to work with the community to bring these matters to a satisfactory resolution.

“By apprehending these offenders, we hope to prevent any further damage to property in this beautiful part of the country.”

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in relation to these suspicious fires to contact Whakatane Police on 07 308 5255.

Alternatively, information may be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
