Tree removal to go ahead in time for Everest challenge

Media Release

Release date: Thursday 18 August 2016

Tree removal to go ahead in time for Everest challenge on Titirangi

Local fitness challenge participants can continue preparing for the Kaiti Hill Everest Challenge held in September, as plans to remove exotic trees from Titirangi are being brought forward.

Starting on Thursday 18 August, about 50 trees around the port side area of Titirangi are going to be felled and mulched as part of the restoration project. This work is set to take up to three weeks to complete and some precautionary track closures will happen during this time.

Closures will only happen during daytime hours and only while the felling work is being done by our contractors. Tracks that aren’t immediately affected will remain open, please stay clear of the worksite.

Planning and Development Group Manager, Nedine Thatcher-Swann says “These trees were originally going to come out later, but the likelihood of increased foot traffic and some lucky scheduling with contractors has allowed us to bring the date forward to hopefully complete the work before the Everest Challenge.”

The Kaiti Hill Everest Challenge involves walking, running or cycling to the top of Titirangi multiple times over a six week period as a way to promote fitness and raise money for charity.

The event is organised by Sport Tairawhiti and Sean Shivnan Pharmacy and is scheduled to start on Sunday September 13.

This year’s charity is supporting Bowel Cancer New Zealand. For more details in how you can participate please visit www.sportgisborne.org.nz or search for Sean Shivnan Pharmacy on Facebook.

Weather will still play a role in the completion of any work on Titirangi. Updates will be posted on our facebook page.
