Lane layout change for Mt Wellington off-ramp

19 August 2016 | AUCKLAND
Lane layout change for Mt Wellington off-ramp

Regular users of State Highway 1 through Mt Wellington will notice changes to the southbound lanes from next week.

From Friday 26 August the NZ Transport Agency is changing the far left lane approaching the southbound Mt Wellington off ramp to a dedicated exit only lane.

Currently the lane continues for approximately 200 metres after the off ramp and then merges with the other southbound lanes. This lane will be removed to encourage drivers to merge earlier and distributing the merge over a longer section of road instead of leaving it until the last minute to merge.

“Removing this merge lane will help to reduce the bottlenecks in this area and improve the traffic flows for motorway users before and after the off ramp,” says Brett Gliddon the Transport Agency’s Auckland Highway Manager.

“This will be a change for people who are familiar with this stretch of the motorway, and means drivers who aren’t exiting at Mt Wellington will need to keep right to avoid finding themselves in the exit only lane.”

Transport Agency staff will begin work to change the lane layout from Sunday 21 August, working overnight to reduce the impact on motorway users.
