Campylobacter typing
Campylobacter typing
Please find attached the interim ESR Report on the Campylobacter genotyping. The information in the report adds to the body of evidence we and others are collecting. It does not exclude any source of contamination at this stage. There is further analysis to be undertaken next week.
ESR says:
This report links a large number of the clinical cases from the Havelock North outbreak with campylobacter found in the water.
There are a number of different strains of campylobacter jejuni present.
Initial high level genetic analysis suggests the isolates in this outbreak are more likely from ruminants source. Some isolates in the water supply are likely to be from wildfowl. Rivers would often have both ruminant and wildfowl sources.
ESR will be analysing using whole genome sequencing these initial isolates, which will have results next week. This will allow a more comprehensive analysis of possible sources.
ESR also need to analyse additional clinical isolates, and isolates from possible sources and additional water samples.
