Woman suffers serious burns in Timaru house fire

A 19-year-old woman was flown to Christchurch hospital with serious burns after a house fire in Church St, Timaru, at about 6am on Sunday 21 August 2016.

A 21-year-old man who suffered minor injuries has now been discharged from hospital.

The fire, which caused extensive damage to the house, is not being treated as suspicious.

The Fire Service would like to remind everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms fitted in their homes and that any heating source is at least one metre away from furniture or other obstructions.

Smoke alarms were installed in the Church Street property, but not in the room where the two people were.

For further information media can contact Fire Safety officer Craig Chalmers on 027 405 6996 as Police have no further involvement.
