Call for Dunedin to be a city of lovers

Dunedin (22 August 2016) – It’s hoped Dunedin will become a city of lovers for a week in September, with residents being asked to show their love for the city.

Keep Dunedin Beautiful Coordinator Ashlea Muston hopes people will express their love by helping to clean up the city as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week.

“Dunedin is a beautiful place to live but like any city we all have to do our bit to keep litter off the streets and out of our waterways.”

Clean-Up Week is not just about picking up litter. It’s about communities working together and people having pride in where they live.

“It helps remind us how important our environment is and how every pair of hands can make a difference.”

Last year 43,000 people took part in Clean-Up Week events across the country, collecting rubbish from coastlines, parks, rivers, recreation areas, highways and town centres.

A public beach clean-up will be held at St Kilda Beach on Saturday, 17 September at 11am.

“We encourage people to create events in their own neighbourhoods too. These can be as simple as a group of friends heading to the park down the road or a class trip to the harbour. Lots of workplaces also get involved as a staff challenge each year, which makes it a fun day out.”

Rubbish bags, gloves and information are provided to those who officially sign up to take part. Keep Dunedin Beautiful can arrange rubbish collection for those participating in the city-wide clean-up event. Please contact them to arrange this.
