Night time roadworks on State Highway 1 through Mana due to start

The NZ Transport Agency is advising the public about night time roadworks taking place on State Highway 1 through Mana Esplanade from 28 August to late September.

NZ Transport Agency regional performance manager Mark Owen says the work will provide a fresh, durable surface for the highway through this area, which is one of the busiest urban roads in Wellington.

Work is planned for two key locations between the Paremata roundabout and the Plimmerton roundabout:

Site 1, Plimmerton: From 28 August to mid-September the works run from Acheron Road to the Plimmerton roundabout.

Site 2, Mana-Paremata: From mid-September, works will take place from Pascoe Avenue to Paremata Bridge. Repairs immediately south of the bridge on State Highways 1 and 58 will be done in preparation for works scheduled later in the summer maintenance season.

Crews will work between the hours of 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday (weather permitting). No Transport Agency-related work will occur during the day, or on Friday or Saturday nights, however utility companies may be working in the area on some days to lay communications fibre under the footpath. This is separate to the Transport Agency’s road resurfacing programme.

“This is the third – and last – year of major road resurfacing work along Mana Esplanade. These works are also the second year that roadworks are being done at night on this stretch of road and it is thanks to working closely with the local community that this can be done,” Mr Owen says.

“We’re doing the work at night because the number of travellers affected reduces from several thousand each hour during the day to a few hundred at night. This will save a lot of frustration for people who travel along Mana Esplanade – we know how busy it is without adding further delays. Night time work can also be carried out quickly because there is less traffic, and it doesn’t disrupt local businesses and activities during the day.

“We’d like to thank those people who live alongside the highway – we know this work can be noisy, and we would like to thank them for their patience.”
