"Drivers urged to protect their vehicles from theft"

Invercargill Police are currently investigating a spate of stolen motor vehicles across the Southland district.

Over the past three weeks 12 motor vehicles have been stolen with all but two being recovered.

In the majority of cases the vehicles were dumped.

Invercargill city areas such as Heidelburg, Georgetown, Newfield and Windsor have been targeted.

A variety of vehicle models have been stolen and Police would like to remind the public to lock their vehicles and leave the keys in a safe and secure area.

It’s possible that one group is responsible for what we believe could be opportunistic thefts.

However, Police continue to keep an open mind while investigating the incidents, which have been happening at various times of the day and week.

As well as issuing prevention advice, Police have increased patrols in the areas where the cars have been taken from.

The recovered vehicles are being forensically examined.

Police have also noticed an increase in burglaries where offenders have entered yards.

Property targeted includes garden furniture, insecure garages and bicycles.

There has been a noticeable increase in the Tay Street area, east of Lindisfarne Street.

Members of the public are also asked to secure items of value within their yards and to report any suspicious behaviour, especially people hanging around vehicles during hours of dark.

Police are working hard to find the culprits and any information which could help investigators can be given to Invercargill Police on 211 0400.
