The story
of Coromandel kauri … and what sort of
future?
A special marae-based workshop for all those who love kauri forests is being held at Matai Whetu Marae on Saturday 16 September.
Organised by the Coromandel Kauri Dieback Forum and Ngāti Maru, the workshop promises something to interest everyone, including an exploration of the unique ecology of the kauri forest, the significance of the kauri forest to iwi, and the history of kauri logging and how it shaped the Peninsula.
There will also be sessions on the science behind kauri dieback disease (featuring leading phytophthora scientist Dr Peter Scott of Scion Research), how mātauranga Māori is being enlisted in the fight against kauri dieback, and what practical measures are being taken to protect Coromandel kauri.
The day will conclude with a brainstorming session so everyone can share their ideas about ways to prevent the disease spreading on the Coromandel Peninsula.
This will be a unique opportunity to learn about the significance of kauri from Māori and Pākehā perspectives, and explore how we can all work together to protect this precious taonga.
